Starbursts and wispy drops: surfactants spreading on gels.

چکیده
The spreading dynamics of surfactant-laden droplets have been studied for both solid and thin liquid substrates. In general, the presence of a surfactant modifies the contact line dynamics due to the Marangoni effect, which creates a surface tension gradient and thus generates pattern-forming instabilities. To determine the effects of varying substrate mobility from a liquid to a solid, we examine the intermediate case of a viscoelastic substrate. We observe novel instabilities of the surfactant-laden drop influenced by both the substrate fluidity and the surfactant concentration. The experimental apparatus consists of a petri dish containing a gel substrate composed of 0.04% to 0.16% agar by weight in FIG. 1. Spreading of Trisiloxanes on Thin Water Film: Moving Front Profile
The spreading of aqueous drops of surfactant on the surface of thin water film was recorded using an Olympus high speed video system with a speed of 100 frames per second. The surfactants used were trisiloxanes of polyethylene oxide chain length between 6 and 9 (EO6-EO9). The results showed that the spreading of trisiloxanes (EO6, EO7, EO8 and EO9) at concentration above their critical micelle ...

Effects of binary mixtures of ionic/nonionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate/2-heptanol or 1-decanol) and nonionic/nonionic surfactants (2-heptnol/1-decanol) on drop/interface coalescence of water drops in a continuous n-heptane phase were examined. The drop size reduced appreciably and the multi-step coalescence was suppressed finally as the concentration of each of the constituting components</em...
متن کاملSpreading of Trisiloxanes EO3 and EO9 Polyethylene Oxide Surfactant over Hydrophobic Substrates
The spreading of aqueous dispersions of trisiloxane with various polyethylene oxide chain length surfactant solutions over hydrophobic surfaces is considered from experimental point of view. It is shown that the transfer of surfactant molecules from the droplet onto the hydrophobic surface changes the wetting characteristics in front of the drop making them useful in waterbased coatings for pla...
متن کاملAn Experimental Study of Acid Diversion by Using Gelled Acid Systems Based on Viscoelastic Surfactants: A Case Study on One of Iran Southwest Oilfields
In matrix acidizing operations, the main goal is increasing permeability. For production engineers, it is desirable that acid could be injected into whole [M.N.1] [amehri.gh2] pay zone. Sometimes, this pay zone has a long height and various sub-layers which have different permeability values. To prevent acid from going completely into the most permeable sub-layer, one of the useful techniques i...
متن کاملThe spreading of macroscopic droplets
2014 Some experimental results on the macroscopic spreading of hanging and sessile drops on smooth surfaces are presented. The results for sessile drops nicely corroborate the main aspects of the spreading theory of de Gennes and Joanny. However, it is shown that one assumption of the theory, namely the retainment of a self-similar shape during spreading, which is approximately true for sessile...
